Personally, I am fed up with reading the prices for Windows Vista. Not only are they extortionate, they also carry a higher price for "rip-off Britain". However, all the prices quoted are always for the retail boxed version of the product.
True, the retail box looks wonderful (and all compliments to
this guy for designing them), but I for one am not willing to pay £232 extra for the box.
Thanks to Amazon (early releasers of original Vista pricing, among other fo-pars), we can see the pricing for Vista OEM - what most computer literate people will buy, whether pre-installed on a new PC or not:
Vista Home Premium: £81.99 / $129USD
Vista Ultimate: £136.99 / $219USD
(quoted for 32-bit versions as 64-bit pricing not released in some countries)
Unsurprisingly, the currency conversion from USD to GBP comes out higher than the prices us Brits are expected to pay. However, £136.99 is better than the £369 retail version, and I'll probably plump for that in the end. After all, programming is my method of earning a living, and I can't write programs for XP which are untested on Vista, when thats the Operating System everybody is buying in the stores...
Nevertheless, I won't be upgrading to Vista for some time. I'm thinking July - it should be stable by then...
Don't know what I'm going to do when my Office 2007 BETA 2 TR expires at the end of next month, its going to be strange getting back to the old 2003 version (2007 is definately overpriced in my opinion, even at OEM).
