Speed's Blog

Just my blog. Nothing more, nothing less.

06-Jan-2007

Witty... but completely irrelevant.

In response to a news story "PCs Get Set to Scream in 2007", a few people made some great comments:

"'computers faster and cooler than ever before' - In other news, the Sun is expected to rise in the East tomorrow and gravity will likely function as normal. Why is this news? Computers are going to be faster?" - Dweller99

"And what will these PC's be screaming? 'Arghhhhh! Get this Vista off of me!!!'" - kajoob

"@kajoob     Nope.  'ARGHHH!! My leg! You broke my leg!'" - FazzMunkle

"'Argghhhh give me back XP'" - TomP

Sony to discontinue monitors

It is widely reported around the web that Sony is set to discontinue *ALL* (including flat screen) monitors, due to a low profit margin. We shall see if this actually occurs, because there is one or two rumours of just one more monitor to be released.

Take a look:

Microsoft Interviews...Itself

Ok, this is rather illogical, but indeed they have done it.
Microsoft has interviewed itself about Microsoft Word 2007, and has posted the interview on its website.

Heres a couple of great quotes from a 3rd party article which has looked at the interview:
"First released in 1983, Word has evolved from the first WYSIWYG word processing program into a ubiquitous and mostly beloved workhorse perhaps best summarized by an even more awkward acronym, WYSIHWBBTM -- What You See Isn't Half of What's Buried Behind These Menus."
"Eighteen years old now, Word has reached the age of consent, never mind that you've been clicking "I Agree" for years now."

Roxik

A story which stayed on the Digg home page for quite a while several months ago has just come to my attention again. The story so far has 3,227 diggs (!) and is an amazing Drag and Drop effect. Wait for the exploding ping pong balls to become planets!:

(Drag the people about and let go ;))

Marvellous Constructions

People who are passionate about a project can build some fantastic things. This bloke has build the Eiffel Tower out of matchsticks, and to make it even better, put in LEDs to light it up at night. Take a peek at the photos (look at the first and last if you don't have time or spirit).

On a side note, somebody made a Marshmallow trebuchet out of Lego... the Legochet; http://www.evilmadscientist.com/article.php/leguchet

Googie Search

The "Search Engine" (wink wink) at www.gooogie.co.uk allows you to create fake search results which simply return a spelling correction. There were more amusing images at source, but I felt like creating my own, and couldn't think of something particularly funny.

Enjoy.

1 Terrabyte Disk Drives

Just before the beginning of the Consumer Electronics Show 2007, two major hard disk manufacturers have announced that they will begin shipping 1TB (technically 1024GB, but in their mind 1000GB) Hard Disks before the end of March this year. Seagate and Hitachi will show off these drives at CES.

Blog Changes

I've made a few changes to my blog;
1. There are a few more sections to the right hand side
2. Archiving has been enabled and set to weekly (see right hand side)
3. Syndication (feeds) has been made clearer, moved, and RSS made available
4. The Powered-By has been clarified
5. Commenting has been enabled for all, not just those with a Google Account
6. There are a few more links on the right hand side

I think the changes are much better, personally!

A Non-Techie Discovers Firefox

This article, entitled A Non-Techie Discovers Free, Legal Software is a basic guide as to why you should use Mozilla Firefox, and Thunderbird the free mail alternative.

I've been a Firefox user since 0.9, ages ago... But I don't really like Thunderbird.

What does 200 Calories Look Like?

A post regarding 200 calories in various foods. Good for general knowledge, but not amusing. Except the Hot Dog. Since when was that a Hot Dog in a country other than America? Sorry...

Things Geeks Did on New Year's Eve

11. Kissed their WoW avatar at midnight.
10. Watched the BIOS date change years.
9. Hoped for a Y2K+7 bug.
8. Too busy playing nethack to notice.
7. Listened to Auld Lang Syne on their iPod.
6. Popped open a bottle of caffeinated champagne.
5. Updated their New Year's Resolution database to reflect the passing year.
4. Defragmented their hard drives.
3. Stayed up for 24 hours to wish all their online friends in different time zones a Happy New Year at the appropriate hour.
2. Had to come in to work to upgrade and reboot servers all night long.
1. Nothing. Real Klingons don't celebrate puny holidays like New Year's Eve.

I hasten to add I did none of these and was at a party.

Asteroid to arrive 2029

"Consider this: On April 13th--Friday the 13th--2029, millions of people are going to go outside, look up and marvel at their good luck. A point of light will be gliding across the sky... A killer asteroid will narrowly miss earth. The asteroid could then get caught in the earth's gravitational pull and slingshot back at earth 5 to 7 years later."

Pi

"You might assume that it'd be useful to know a trillion digits of pi. However, if you had a circle the size of the observable universe, and you wanted to compute its circumference with an accuracy equal to the size of a proton, the number of digits of pi that you'd need is only 50."

Happy New Year 2007!

I'm just off out to a New Year's Party, so time to say:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hope it's a good'un, for all us Year 11s we will be in the Sixth Form before this all comes around again, will have done our GCSEs and had the results. Others, you'll be @ Uni, have your A-Levels, or your 11+ results. In other terms, some of you will have drivers licences and different landmark birthdays. Heres a good luck to all of them, and raise a glass :)
